What these machines are for
An alligator shear cuts with a pivoting arm rather than a straight guillotine blade. It costs less and takes less floor space than a guillotine, and for light to medium scrap in a smaller yard it often does everything you need.
What to weigh up when choosing
- Pivoting-arm machines lose force toward the end of the stroke; check the capacity at the tip, not at the hinge.
- If you will regularly cut heavy structural steel, this is the wrong machine — go to a guillotine.
- Blade configuration (straight or profiling) should match what you cut most often.
- Guarding and hold-down matter more on this machine than on a guillotine because of the open cutting action.
